About Digital Law Lab

I founded Digital Law Lab in 2022 to help the legal profession make better use of technology. In July 2026, its work moved from the original incorporated association to Digital Law Lab Pty Ltd.

Today, Digital Law Lab provides technology consulting and education to lawyers, from sole practitioners to large firms. Much of that work is now about artificial intelligence: training lawyers to use tools such as Microsoft Copilot well, and advising firms on how to adopt AI safely and ethically. You can read more about my AI Workshop for Lawyers.

Digital Law Lab began with a focus on access to justice in its traditional sense. While teaching legal technology at Flinders University, I saw how even simple applications built by law students could make a real difference to not-for-profit organisations and the communities they serve. I am still glad to help not-for-profit organisations where technology can make that kind of difference.

Over time, though, I have come to see access to justice more broadly. When lawyers use technology well, they work more efficiently, protect their clients' information better, and can spend more of their time on the work that matters to their clients. Helping them do that is what Digital Law Lab is about.

Mark Ferraretto

About Me

I am a practising solicitor and the principal of Mark Ferraretto Legal Practice. Before law, I spent 25 years as an IT professional and consultant, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1989. I worked across education, banking and finance, government and airlines, in both Australia and Hong Kong.

I began studying law while living in Hong Kong, and returned to Australia with my family in 2012. I graduated from the University of Adelaide Law School in 2016 and was admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia in August 2017.

Before joining Flinders, I worked at an Adelaide firm, where I advised technology-based clients, wrote software, evaluated practice management systems, and introduced and managed the firm's first electronic discovery and trial management systems for a large litigation matter.

In 2019 I joined Flinders University as a Lecturer in Law. Among other topics, I taught Law in a Digital Age, in which law students learnt to code and wrote legal software applications for not-for-profit clients. After a brief return to practice in 2021, I went back to Flinders in 2023 as a Senior Lecturer in Law and continued to develop its legal technology curriculum. I still work with Flinders on a range of technology and social impact projects.

In 2025 I returned to private practice, where I run Mark Ferraretto Legal Practice alongside Digital Law Lab.

Outside work, I am a keen pilot. I hold a Private Pilot Licence and a Recreational Pilot Certificate. I have served on the board of Recreational Aviation Australia and on the committee of the Adelaide Soaring Club, and I am a member of the South Australian Aviation Museum. I also write about aviation law on the Mark Ferraretto Legal Practice blog.
